Catskill Culture: A Mountain Rat's Memories of the Great Jewish Resort Area
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (October, 1998)
Author: Phil Brown
Average review score:

Nostalgia
Recollection of times spent with my family were brought back to life. Having married into the Siegel family that owned several hotels in the Swan Lake area, including the Commodore and the hotel my inlaws sold to the Dinnersteins; and the author having worked at the Commodore brought back many years of my youth. There is nothing so gratifying as to have someone write of part of your life, and this is What Mr. Brown has done. To go back even further, I remember playing with a small four piece "orchestra" at a place in Monticello, called Skliars - that was 64 years ago. What wonderful memories!.

A warm, detailed account of a special place, special time.
I was born and raised in the Catskills, grew up on a chicken farm, and worked in resort hotels during my teens. I always thought this was a very special experience, and now Phil Brown's book brings it back with wonderful detail and confirms my feelings about how special it all was. This book is not only about Catskills culture; it is also about Catskills economics, and explains quite vividly how hard people worked to make the Catskills experience enjoyable for those who came for the summer.

My kids won't have a birthday without this book!
My six and three year old fight over who gets to take this book to bed. Thanks to all the outstanding food, game, craft and treat ideas in this book, we've survived (and enjoyed) a rodeo round-up, dinosaur dig and super hero invasion. It's the best party planning book out there, for kids or adult parties (the holiday party ideas are low stress, high fun!). If you have kids, you have to have this book! Order your copy now!

Wow!
I absolutely love the creative ideas Celebrate has to offer. If you have children or just want fun ideas for your family get-togethers this is a must have!

Champagne Cocktails

Authors: Jared Brown, Don Gatterdam, and Anistatia R. Miller

If books were money, this would be a billionaire!
I spotted this little gem a few years ago in my local library. I had tried to order it in the past but was told it was out of print. I "scoured the countryside" looking for it, and I finally succeeded in getting this book in my hot little hands! I'll NEVER sell it or lend it out!

This book is intoxicating. The graphics are very bright, bubbly and cutting edge, along with all the fab pictures scattered throughout the text. I love all the recipes for various champagne cocktails, nibbles, quotes and all that great trivia about the "king of wines"...especially the chapters about taking baths in champagne. If I win the lottery someday, well I just might try it, but in the mean time, I'll just enjoy a glass with my book.

Full of "bubbly" fun and creative "sparkle".
Another fabulous book for Anastasia and Jared. Full of "bubbly" fun and creative "sparkle" this book was also asthetically gorgeous. Chef Kathy Casey

Character in Crisis: A Fresh Approach to the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (February, 1996)
Author: William P. Brown
Average review score:

A fresh theological reflection on biblical wisdom
William Brown is talented as a biblical scholar, a theologian and a writer. Alarmed that the Church has virtually ignored the diverse and theologically-rich books of Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes, Brown makes a strong argument that the function of biblical wisdom is character formation. He also shows an interest in ethics, speculating throughout about how individuals embodying sapiential virtues might interact with the larger community. Brown finally argues that the NT letter of James draws on the OT wisdom tradition's emphasis on consistency of conduct and conviction for the individual and the community. His conclusion, like the rest of the book, is provocative: "The final test of wisdom and character is the quality of community it engenders" (164).

A Foundation in Wisdom Literature
I began reading this book with hardly any knowledge about Old Testament wisdom literature, and now that I've finished, I am able to carry on a fairly intelligent discussion about the whys and wherefores of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. Character in Crisis explores the above writings and explains how they reinvent the traditional view of wisdom found in Old Testament times. Each wisdom writer is on a quest to discover how to live with integrity and godliness in spite of suffering, frustration, and daily difficulties. Brown details each person's journey, keeping his explanations weighty enough to be interesting but colorful and applicable so that they are not lost in theological babble. His arguments keep the mind churning in an effort to work out the questions presented by the Old Testament books, and he encourages readers to embark on their own quest for character. Books that delve into the theology of the wisdom writings are far and few between, so if you desire a solid foundation in Old Testament wisdom literature, this may be the book for you.

A must-have kids book. Too bad its out of print.
My brother and I had all of the Charlie Brown Super Book of Questions and Answers books. They were great! Too bad they are out of print. I would recommend trying to find them used because they are wonderful books. Educational and very fun to read.

A must have for any child - if you can still find it!
All of the Charlie Brown Super Books of Questions and Answers are a must for any child's library. Unfortunately they are now out of print. My sister and I each had two of the five books and I read all of them over and over again until the bindings fell off. They offer unique insight into the world around us from a child's point of view by asking and answering questions that kids are curious about. My sister and I still remember these books fondly - too bad they are out of print. They are definitely a classic in my book!

Too good to put down!
I picked this up a few months ago and started it, then misplaced it. But in 2 days, I finished it! A quick and easy read. I felt that I could relate to "Shirley" in so many ways and on many levels. The author has created a character that is so believable, is a great example and is NOT perfect! I liked that a lot. I can't wait to read her other books in the Shirley line. I laughed and cried, was moved and learned all at the same time! Thank you Toni!

Christmas Will Never Be The Same
I read this story and I know I will never think of the holiday season in the same way. When I get rushed and stressed, I will stop and remember what it's all about. Thank you! For A wonderful story and a true to life experience. I have my shopping for the holidays taken care of already. Only I want my friends to read your book BEFORE Christmas. It's the kind of book that I want to read again and again, to remind me what all of the fuss is reall about.

Cheerful: A Picture Story
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (May, 1978)
Author: Palmer Brown
Average review score:

The Most Wonderful Children's Book
This is my favorite book of all time. If I could keep only one book of the hundreds I own, this would be it. Touching prose and the most lovely drawings of any children's book -- the details inspire the imagination. Anyone who has the opportunity to pick up a copy should do so with haste.

My favorite book in the world
CHEERFUL is a relic from my childhood, a beautiful little book with ezquisite illustrations and some of the most achingly poignant prose I have ever experienced. Its tale of a light-footed wood mouse longing for the land his mother used to sing of is no doubt a strong influence on my own writing, and an unconscious inspiration for my first book. I highly recommend this book, if you can find it, for parents of children, and for anyone with a child still living inside.

Chronicles of Clovis
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Book Contractors (January, 2000)
Authors: Saki and Richard Brown
Average review score:

Wonderful stories. Unblemished prose.
These short stories constitute some of the best in the English language. They have quite a range in tone, from the extreamely humorous Unrest Cure to the mystery of Sredni Vashtar. Only The Easter Egg diappoints. Written in an Edwardian prose that never disappoints, read it like it was one of life's little luxuries.

excellent
black comedy at its best. not for everyone. read only one story at any given sitting, or the flavor and the impact goes away. One of the Best short storie collections ever printed.

Collected Poems

Authors: Christopher Maurer, Federico Garcia Lorca, Catherine Brown, Federico Poems Garcia Lorca, and Galway Kinnell
Average review score:

Collected Lorca in fine translation
This volume is really superb. The translations are of consistently high quality. I particularly enjoyed Jerome Rothenberg's "Suites." Too bad this book is out of print!

Magnificent!
When I first came across this book in my library I was so smitten with it I tried to gulp it all down in one swallow. As a poet myself, though, I am still eating and enjoying every bite. Burdened by the beauty of his metaphors it has been a challenge to read him without weeping. Though my only famil- iarity with him is through the translations in this volume, I am Latin enough to feel the intense passion, sorrow and melancholy he seems to have been possessed of in his lifetime. His struggle with himself, his love for his country and its ancient symbolism, his devotion to the Old Songs, his sadness at the death of a friend who was a Bullfgihter, his generous respect for the Gypsies, are all painted with the deep colors of language ... sometimes sweet, sometimes tongue-in-cheek humerous sometimes sardonic, sometimes satirical ... even ironical. But there is a mysticism that illuminates it all ... even his sorrow shines. He is a true wanderer ... he roams his! own world and ours and leaves us all mystified, a little confused, and wondering.. What is his "green" ... what does it, can it, truly, signify? Will anyone ever know? This volume is an accumulation of poems that demonstrates a rare and prodigious talent. His assassination at the hands of his enemies deprives us of more of his great work. This is a luminour opus! It is a shame it is out of print. Every poet, every wanna-be-poet, should read and re-read this book!
